The Place of the Nigerian youth in Nation Building

Their is an urgent need for Nigerian Youths to have a unified interaction on the way forward for this great country
The Place of the Nigerian youth in Nation Building
By Evelyn Okakwu

The place of the youth in the struggle to attain true democracy can be
likened to the function of water and sunlight in the growth of plants.
Just in the same way as plants require photosynthesis as a major
source of growth so does the growth of any democracy thrive only in
the presence of a healthy participation of youths in the given
society.
All over the world the place of the youth in National development is
accorded with utmost priority.
In Nigeria, the vice president of the country Namadi Sambo, during a
recent address to youths at an event organised by the Alumni
association of the Ahmadu Bello University reiterated the call for
youth involvement in the fight against corruption in the country.
Sambo while speaking at the Ahmadu Bello University’s maiden home
coming celebration of past students said “I remember even before our
time how students from the University of Ibadan came out to the
Nigerian parliament to oppose the defence pact, which was meant to
retain some control by the British on Nigeria and the pact was
aborted. I remember how Nigerian students were vanguards in the fight
against apartheid and liberation of some African countries. There were
times when, which ever policy the government was considering, the
first consideration would be whether people would accept it. And that
time when they said people, the first consideration was students who
would react on behalf of the people”.
He noted that the vanguard of students was active even during military
rule in the protest against bad governance and bad policies. He stated
that the dynamism has remained. But is that really the case? Can the
youth in the present Nigeria be vouched for, in the united struggle
against corruption?

You know the truth, I am not well at all to return to office as I am now.”

A Place to Unleash Talents

Guest Painting

Penultimate weekend, the White Space, Lagos’s artsy, form-shifting pop up space-for-hire transformed yet again into a time capsule on the occasion of the Modern Day School of Arts’ arts and cultural showcase, a reach into technology of decades past and how same has partaken in the evolution of culture.
The school’s presentation dovetailed into White Space’s presumably annual event window, Big 60, a frothing Thursday to Sunday art/fashion/culture event rollercoaster that runs for 60 days. The tag line of the two months-long event reads, Eat. Drink. Play and this was the case and beyond at M.D.S.A.’s collaboration with the space – the added benefit being a crash course in visual arts, a re-education on just how much our culture as a people has changed, how much of it we may have lost, what we need to appreciate more of.

Chiwetel Ejiofor: eyes on the Oscars

Ejiofor
  By Peju Akande

Some stars are born, some are made. But there is hardly ever a star who doesn’t get burnished through fire before it truly begins to shine. And so it is for Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Today, he is the toast of entertainment critics; he is on the A- list of Hollywood’s movie directors; leading ladies are slinking their well adorned arms around him and the paparazzi can’t get enough of this hunk of a man.
But before all the glitz and glamour; before his most recent and riveting role in 12 Years A Slave, Chiwetel Ejiofor had travelled the long tortuous and even tragic road to stardom both on stage, on the screen and in life.
Born to  UK-based Nigerians, Chiwetel’s parents Arinze, a medical doctor and Obiajulu, a pharmacist fled Nigeria to the UK in 1967 during the Biafran War that threatened to tear Nigeria apart. The sweethearts settled somewhere in South London and later got married in March 1974.
Their life was comfortable since both were medical health professionals and having undergone further studies that enabled them practise in Britain, they were set for the good life. So, when in 1977, Chiwetel was born, the second of four children, life couldn’t have been any better for the Ejiofor family.

It is also a day for stock taking when the king gives account of his stewardship for the out gone year and projects into the New Year.
In Igbo land ofala is celebrated mostly in December and January. For some communities like Enugwu-Ukwu, Ofala is Igu aro. To the people of Igbariam, it is ovalla. Nigerians and the Use of toilets

By Evelyn Okakwu
Cleanliness, they say, is next to Godliness. So when people start considering their hygiene in very low terms, one can say, by implication, that they have negated the closest principle of to that of divinity. The world marks word toilet day on the 19th of November each year, as put in place by the United Nation’s organisation the UNO.

Nonetheless, in this New Year, there might as well be the need to analyse the attitude of the people towards the use of the toilet in public places as well as in domestic environment.

Nigerians expectations in 2014

As we experience the beginning of another new year Nigerians analyse
the previous year on the basis of the country’s political and economic
developments.
Chidike ukoh the President of National Youth empowerment Association
(NEYA) Africa was the first on the list of Nigerians who spoke on the
nation’s political and economic State in 2013
“There have been a number of events that have shaped the developments
of the country in 2013. In the area of economic developments, there
are indices to prove that the macro-economic activities are picking
up. Though not exactly on the high pitch, because everybody is not
feeling it now; the downtrodden are not too sure that the economic
indices given out by government agencies are touching their lives.
